Zambia Grade 10 Mathematics Syllabus

This syllabus outlines the topics covered in the Grade 10 Mathematics course. It aims to equip learners with the necessary mathematical knowledge and skills for everyday life and further education, fostering logical reasoning, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

Grade 10 Topics

1. Sets:

  • Set Operations: Learners will perform operations on sets, including higher-level operations.

2. Index Notation:

  • Indices: Learners will apply laws of indices, simplify expressions with positive, negative, zero, and fractional indices, and solve equations involving indices.

3. Algebra:

  • Basic Processes: Learners will expand and simplify expressions, factorize algebraic expressions (using common factors, grouping, quadratic factors, and difference of two squares), and simplify algebraic fractions.

4. Matrices:

  • Transpose of a Matrix: Learners will find the transpose of a matrix.
  • Multiplication of Matrices: Learners will multiply matrices (up to 3x3).
  • Inverse of a Matrix: Learners will calculate the determinant of a 2x2 matrix, find the inverse of a 2x2 matrix, solve systems of linear equations in two variables using matrices, and apply matrices to real-life problems.

5. Similarity and Congruency:

  • Application of Ratio and Proportion: Learners will calculate the scale on a map, calculate length and area using a given scale (and vice versa), and calculate areas and volumes of similar figures. They will also apply ratio and proportion to solve problems on similarity and congruence.

6. Travel Graphs:

  • Distance-Time Graphs: Learners will compute average speed, distance, and time.
  • Velocity-Time Graphs: Learners will determine acceleration and deceleration, draw travel graphs, calculate the distance under a velocity-time graph, and relate the area under the graph to distance traveled.

7. Social and Commercial Arithmetic:

  • Investments: Learners will perform calculations involving shares, dividends, and investment bonds.

8. Bearings:

  • Bearings and Scale Drawing: Learners will draw/sketch diagrams to represent position and direction, and use bearing and scale drawing in real-life problems.

9. Symmetry:

  • Symmetry of Solids: Learners will determine the order of rotational symmetry, determine the symmetry of solids, and determine plane symmetry.

10. Computer and Calculator:

  • Functions on a Calculator: Learners will demonstrate the use of different functions on a calculator.
  • Basic Components of a Computer: Learners will describe the components of a computer (input, process, and output devices).
  • Algorithms: Learners will describe various methods of implementing an algorithm and outline problem-solving stages.

This syllabus also emphasizes learner-centered approaches, such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), where learners actively participate in solving real-life problems. The use of technology, including computer software and calculators, is encouraged. Assessment is an integral part of the learning process, and various assessment techniques are employed.
