Zimbabwe Form 1-4 (O-Level) Mathematics

The Zimbabwe Form 1-4 Mathematics syllabus aims to develop learners into critical thinkers and problem solvers. The curriculum emphasizes practical application of mathematical concepts in other learning areas and in everyday life. It also aims to foster effective communication, teamwork, and values such as discipline and integrity. The syllabus covers a wide range of mathematical topics, equipping learners with the skills needed for various careers and further studies.

Topics Covered:

The following topics are covered across Forms 1-4:

  • Real Numbers: Number concepts, operations, approximations, estimations, ratios, proportions, standard form, number bases, and scales.
  • Sets: Set notation, types of sets, Venn diagrams, and set operations.
  • Financial Mathematics: Consumer arithmetic (household and corporate bills, profit/loss, discount, budgets), simple and compound interest, hire purchase, foreign exchange, taxes (sales, income, VAT), and customs/excise duty.
  • Measures and Mensuration: Units of measurement (time, mass, length, temperature, capacity, area, volume, density), perimeter, area, volume, and surface area of various shapes.
  • Graphs: Cartesian plane, coordinates, linear and quadratic graphs, functional notation, distance-time graphs, speed-time graphs, and displacement/velocity-time graphs.
  • Variation: Direct, inverse, joint, and partial variation.
  • Algebra: Algebraic manipulation, equations, inequalities, indices, logarithms, and linear programming.
  • Geometry: Points, lines, angles, bearings, polygons, circles, similarity, congruency, constructions, loci, and symmetry.
  • Statistics: Data collection, classification, representation (frequency tables, bar charts, pie charts, histograms, frequency polygons, cumulative frequency curves), measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), and measures of dispersion (range, quartiles, interquartile range).
  • Trigonometry: Pythagoras' theorem, trigonometric ratios, sine rule, cosine rule, and area of triangles.
  • Vectors: Definition, notation, types of vectors, vector operations (addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication), magnitude, and vector properties of plane shapes.
  • Matrices: Order, types, operations (addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication, multiplication), determinants, inverse matrices, and solving simultaneous equations.
  • Transformations: Translation, reflection, rotation, enlargement, stretch, and shear using geometric methods and matrices.
  • Probability: Definition, terms, experimental and theoretical probability, single and combined events, outcome tables, tree diagrams, and probability rules.

Assessment:

Assessment is divided into continuous assessment (30%) and summative assessment (70%). Continuous assessment includes topic tasks, written tests, end-of-term exams, projects, and profiling of soft skills. Summative assessment consists of two papers covering all syllabus topics. Paper 1 focuses on short-answer questions, while Paper 2 includes both short and long-answer questions.
