Zimbabwe Form 1 School Syllabus - Arts

This syllabus covers the Zimbabwe Form 1-4 Arts curriculum. It aims to equip learners with creative self-expression, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The syllabus fosters creativity, imagination, sensory perception, innovation, conceptual thinking, and observation skills. It also develops artistic skills and provides form and meaning to learners' ideas, thoughts, and feelings by widening cultural horizons and encouraging enterprise.

The curriculum is divided into five main topics:

1. History of Zimbabwean Art and Cultural Dynamics:

  • Form 1: History of art and cultural dynamics in Zimbabwean communities; The role of art and artists in socio-economic and political development.
  • Form 2: History of rock art in Zimbabwe; Role of art in socio-economic development; Zimbabwean stone sculpture.
  • Form 3: History of art in Zimbabwe; The role of art in socio-economic development.
  • Form 4: History of world art; The role of art in socio-economic development. Zimbabwean stone sculpture is a notable art form, with roots in pre-colonial times. Contemporary Zimbabwean stone sculpture often draws on Shona culture and folklore.

2. The Creative Processes and Art Making:

  • Form 1: Conceptual development of themes; Elements of art and principles of design; Tools and media of expression; Processes and production of art works.
  • Form 2: Development of themes in art; Tools and media of expression; Elements of art and principles of design; Production and process of art works.
  • Form 3: Creative process of art themes; Elements and principles of design; Tools and media of expression.
  • Form 4: Conceptual development of themes; Elements and principles of design; Tools and expression of media; Production and process of art works.

3. Art Appreciation and Aesthetic Awareness:

  • Form 1: Elements of art; Material culture in Zimbabwe; Zimbabwean artists and art works.
  • Form 2: Elements and principles of art; Zimbabwe stone sculpture.
  • Form 3: Elements and principles of designing; Display design; Appreciation of Zimbabwean cultural content; Representational and non-representational art.
  • Form 4: Elements of art and principles of design; Appreciation of multi-cultural diversity; Representational to abstract art.

4. Art and Technology:

  • Form 1: The development of art technology in Zimbabwe during the pre-colonial era; Graphic design.
  • Form 2: Development of art technology in Zimbabwe during the colonial and post-colonial period; Graphic design.
  • Form 3: The development of art technology in Africa; Graphic design project with the work book.
  • Form 4: The development of art technology world over; Graphic design project; Art technology portfolio.

5. The Business of Art:

  • Form 1: Principles of art business; Aspects of art administration; Evaluation, appreciation, and preservation of public collections.
  • Form 2: Principles of art business; Aspects of art administration; Evaluation, appreciation, and preservation of collections.
  • Form 3: Principles of art business; Aspects of art administration; Evaluation, appreciation, and preservation of collections; Public art and national pride.
  • Form 4: Principles of art business; Aspects of art administration; Evaluation, appreciation, and preservation of collections; Public art and national pride.

Assessment is continuous from Form 1-4 through coursework (practical and theory) and examinations.
