Zimbabwe Grade 2 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Curriculum

This curriculum introduces learners to basic ICT concepts and skills, emphasizing practical application and integration with other subjects. It follows a developmental approach, building upon learners' existing exposure to technology.

I. ICT Tools

  • Identifying ICT Tools: Learners identify various ICT tools in their environment, including computers, mobile phones, and other electronic devices.
  • Computer Parts and Functions: Grade 2 focuses on identifying and understanding the functions of essential computer parts like the monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, printer, and system unit.
  • Secondary Storage Devices: Learners are introduced to secondary storage devices such as hard disks, CDs, DVDs, pen drives, and memory cards.
  • Tablets: The curriculum incorporates the use of tablets, covering handling techniques, identification of parts, and basic applications like drawing programs.

II. Creating and Publishing

  • Basic Drawing and Coloring: Early childhood development levels involve scribbling, puzzles, and coloring activities.
  • Drawing and Auto Shapes: Progresses to more structured drawing activities and using auto shapes in drawing software.
  • Digitizing Information: Learners begin to digitize information through drawing and text input.

III. Application Software

  • Paint Software: Introduction to basic paint software for drawing and creating simple images.
  • Word Processing: Beginnings of word processing skills, including text input and formatting.
  • Multimedia: Working with multimedia elements, including images, sound, and video.

IV. Safety and Security

  • Computer Lab Rules: Emphasis on safety rules and regulations for the computer lab, including proper handling of equipment and safe use of electricity.
  • Computer Safety and Security: Understanding basic computer safety and security practices, including protecting computers from electrical damage and practicing safe shutdown procedures.
  • Health Hazards and E-waste Management: Awareness of health hazards associated with computer use and the importance of proper e-waste management.

V. Programming

  • Control and Commands: Introduction to basic programming concepts through controlling devices and issuing commands.
  • Scratch Programming: Using Scratch programming to control robot movements and understand basic programming logic.

Methodology:

The curriculum emphasizes learner-centered approaches, including problem-solving, games, simulations, discovery learning, and project-based learning.

Assessment:

Continuous assessment is used throughout, focusing on practical assignments and profiling. Tests are introduced in Grade 1.
