Zimbabwe Grade 3 Curriculum - Environmental Science

Environmental Science topics are integrated within the Science and Technology learning area in the Zimbabwe Grade 3 curriculum. The syllabus addresses several environmental topics, including:

  • Water: This topic covers the importance of water, sources of water, uses of water, and water safety. Grade 3 learners explore the concept of water as an ecosystem and a habitat.
  • Weather and Climate: This topic introduces basic weather concepts such as temperature, rainfall, and wind. Learners also explore different types of weather and their impact on the environment.
  • Soil, Plants, and Animals: This topic covers soil formation, soil types, and soil properties. Learners also study different plant parts and their functions, as well as the characteristics and classification of invertebrate animals. Useful and harmful insects are also examined.
  • Landforms and Maps: This topic introduces different landforms, both natural and man-made. Learners also begin to develop basic map skills.
  • Sustainable Resource Management: This topic introduces the concept of resources, both natural and man-made. Learners explore the importance of sustainable resource use and identify sources of waste.

The curriculum emphasizes a learner-centered, hands-on approach, with activities such as experiments, educational tours, and project work. Assessment is conducted through continuous assessment and a summative examination.
