Zimbabwe Grade 3 Religious and Moral Education Curriculum

This curriculum focuses on developing an understanding of family, religion, and morals, promoting respect, tolerance, and good values (Unhu/Ubuntu/Vumunhu). It covers various religions practiced in Zimbabwe, including Indigenous Religion, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The curriculum also emphasizes family cohesion, moral uprightness, and acceptable behaviors.

Family

  • Concept of Family: This section explores different family structures (nuclear, monogamous, polygamous, child-headed, single-parent), family names, totems, and resources. It emphasizes the importance of family unity and explores family life within various religious contexts.
  • Family and Religion: This section examines family practices in relation to different religions, highlighting how families participate in religious activities and the role of religion in family life.
  • Family and Community: Learners explore family roles within the community, including chores, responsibilities, and participation in events. It also emphasizes caring for the needy within the community and how different religions contribute to this aspect.
  • Social and Emotional Learning: This section focuses on self-awareness, self-esteem, behavior management, and the impact of actions on others. It also explores the influence of religion on self-management.

Religion

  • Concept of Religion: This section introduces the concept of religion within the family context, exploring different religions practiced in Zimbabwe.
  • Indigenous Religion: This section delves into the origins, names of the Supreme Being, sacred places, songs, dances, religious artifacts, attire, symbols, sacred days, key teachings, food laws, and taboos associated with Indigenous Religion.
  • Christianity: This section covers the founder, names of the Supreme Being, sacred days, places of worship, symbols, attire, the Holy Book, key teachings, and practices of Christianity.
  • Judaism: This section explores the founder, names of the Supreme Being, places of worship, sacred days, symbols, attire, Holy Books, and key teachings of Judaism.
  • Islam: This section covers the founder, names of the Supreme Being, places of worship, Holy days, symbols, attire, the Holy Book, and key teachings of Islam.

Morals and Values

  • Concept of Morals and Values: This section distinguishes between right and wrong, explores attributes of good morals, and emphasizes the importance of belonging to a religion and the associated responsibilities. It also covers respect for others and the benefits of showing respect.
  • Rights and Responsibilities: This section examines the rights and responsibilities associated with belonging to a religion, including respect for other human beings. It also covers children's rights and responsibilities, as well as the importance of fairness.
  • Conflict and Conflict Management: This section explores conflict at home, with friends, and at school. It also introduces conflict management strategies and the role of religion in conflict resolution.
  • National Value Systems: This section focuses on values such as respect, tolerance, patriotism, empathy, self-respect, responsibility, transparency, diligence, team building, self-discipline, and dignity.
  • Religion on Technology and Enterprise: This section explores the use of technology in religion, the impact of technology on values, and the use of religious artifacts as an enterprise.

Religion and Health

  • Religion and Abuse: This section covers forms of sexual abuse, potential perpetrators, and religious solutions to child sexual abuse.
  • Religion and Gender: This section explores gender roles and the importance of religion in promoting gender equality.
  • Religion and Sexuality: This section covers sex identification and religious practices related to sexuality.
  • Religion, HIV and AIDS: This section discusses the causes of HIV and AIDS, religious attitudes towards HIV and AIDS, awareness on HIV and AIDS, and solutions to HIV and AIDS.
  • Healthy Living: This section covers personal hygiene, health habits, and how religions encourage healthy living. It also discusses the importance of cleanliness during adolescence.
