Zimbabwe Grade 5 Curriculum - Physical Education, Sport and Mass Displays (PESMD)
This curriculum is designed for Junior School Learners (Grade 3-7) and aims to provide a comprehensive Physical Education, Sport, and Mass Displays experience. It emphasizes psychomotor skill development, physical, mental, social, emotional, and moral growth, and aesthetic awareness. Safety is paramount in all activities. The curriculum is presented as a single document, covering three study areas: Physical Education, Sport, and Mass Displays. Assessment is both continuous (70%) and summative (30%).
Physical Education
- Human Body: Grade 5 focuses on body parts involved in storing and transporting food.
- Safety and Health: Covers healthy living habits at home, school, and in the community. Includes safety precautions for handling apparatus, warm-up and cool-down activities, and diseases related to lack of exercise.
- Aquatic Skills: Focuses on aquatic survival skills, entry into water, floating, gliding, submerging, turning, and arm and leg actions for front, back, and breaststroke.
- Kids Athletics: Includes an 8-minute endurance race, sprint-hurdle relays, bend running, jumping for distance and height (using a pole), rotational throwing for distance and accuracy, target throws over a barrier, and the teen javelin throw.
Sport
- Invasion Games: Emphasizes defending and attacking in relation to time and speed, and positioning within boundaries, considering teammates and opponents.
- Target and Combat Games: Includes aiming at stationary and average mobile targets up to 35m, bouncing balls to hit targets, and body orientation for movement.
- Net Games: Focuses on strokes for height, spin, and distance.
- Striking Games: Covers grip, stance, footwork, and well-timed backward or forward drives with reaction.
- Adventure Games: Includes orienteering, mountaineering, and animal riding.
- Educational Gymnastics: Focuses on transference of weight using different body parts at different levels, forceful movements, movement sequences, and contrasting quick, light, and heavy movements.
Mass Displays
- Music: Involves playing percussion band instruments and other musical instruments, and combining these with songs.
- Background Art: Focuses on creating shapes, colors, and symbols depicting themes.
- Arena Acts: Includes rhythmic movement to cover space and direction with tempo, combining movements into arena routines with longer play, incorporating traditional game themes, and physical exercises symbolizing play, sport, and games.
