Zimbabwe Lower 6 Curriculum - Physical Education

This curriculum focuses on both practical and theoretical aspects of physical education. The syllabus aims to encourage enjoyment in physical activity by providing learners with opportunities to participate in a range of activities and develop an understanding of effective and safe physical performance. This understanding helps learners appreciate the principles, practices, and training that underpin improved performance, better health, and well-being. The ultimate goal is oriented towards coaching, creating well-rounded sportsmen with a good working knowledge of their activities.

Lower 6 (AS Level) Curriculum

Theory (70% weighting):

  • Section A: Anatomy and Physiology: This section covers the biological aspects of physical education. A strong background in Biology is recommended due to the complexity of this section.
  • Section B: Acquiring, Developing & Performing Motor Skills: This section focuses on the development and execution of motor skills.
  • Section C: A Contemporary Study of PE & Sport (focus on the UK): This section examines contemporary issues in physical education and sport, with a focus on the UK. A good command of English is necessary for this section due to the essay-style answers required. The exam consists of three compulsory questions (one per section), each carrying 30 marks.

Practical (30% weighting):

  • Chosen Activities (20%): Students choose two activities from various categories. These activities are filmed for moderation and assessed based on specific criteria, including drill-type activities and competitive situations.
  • Action Plan (10%): Students develop a written action plan (minimum 10 A4 pages) on one of their chosen activities, following specific parameters.

This curriculum can be a pathway to careers in teaching, coaching, personal training, physiotherapy, sports psychotherapy, and other jobs related to supporting professional athletes.
