Zimbabwe Lower 6 Curriculum - Woodwork

This curriculum focuses on Wood Technology and Design, encompassing both theoretical and practical skills. The Advanced Level course culminates in a Design Project assessed as Paper 4 (6027/4).

Advanced Level Wood Technology and Design (6027/4): Design Project

This project requires students to select one option from a provided list and complete the following:

  • Design Folio: A detailed A3 folio documenting the design process from initial situation analysis to final solution plans. This should include costing and a final project evaluation.
  • Scaled Mock-up/Model: A well-constructed scaled model of the chosen design solution.
  • Artefact: A well-constructed physical artefact of the final design solution.

Project guidelines encourage the combination of different materials, with wood being the predominant material. Metal and plastics can also be incorporated. The use of computer applications like CAD or CAM is permitted.

Production Considerations (where applicable):

  • Testing moisture content of timber before use.
  • Testing timber strength before use.
  • Incorporating jigs and templates.
  • Considering patenting processes and quality control measures in the evaluation.

Specimen Paper Options:

The specimen paper provides two example project options:

  • Option 1: Paperback Book Storage Unit
      • Situation: A family needs a storage solution for frequently used paperback books of varying sizes.
      • Brief: Design and create a free-standing unit to store paperback books neatly, accommodating at least three different sizes, made from solid wood, incorporating angle joints, and machined.
  • Option 2: Meal Serving Unit for Bedridden Patient
      • Situation: An elderly individual post-stroke requires assistance with meals while in bed.
      • Brief: Design and create a mobile, height-adjustable unit with a braking mechanism, suitable for serving meals to a bedridden patient. The unit should be machined.

General Curriculum Information:

While a comprehensive syllabus document for Advanced Level Wood Technology and Design was not directly accessible, related information suggests the curriculum covers a broad range of topics, including material technology, tools and tool technology, enterprise skills, safety and health, construction techniques, and design processes. The Forms 1-4 syllabus emphasizes problem-solving and aims to develop learners' ability to shape their environment.
