Fun with Phonics (Phase 3)

  • Type

    Ongoing class

  • Duration

    10 classes (60 mins / class)

  • Size

    8 students / class

Julian Yon has created a systematic phonics course for those who have completed Phase 1 and 2. This course will focus on consonant and vowel diagraphs. Digraphs are one of the letter combinations taught after students master single letter sounds. When two consonants work together to make one sound, we call them a digraph. More tricky words will be learned during this course. Once children have learnt to read a variety of CVC words, they move onto reading digraphs (two letters that make up one sound). They will learn the sounds such as /ch/ and /sh/ and be shown how to represent these sounds as letters. When students learn that they can find digraphs in words, they are able to decode words much more quickly!
This course will cover:
  • Teaching phonemes in 2 different sets (j, v, w, x and y, zz, z, qu)
  • Consonant digraphs – sh, ch, th, ng, gn, ph, kn
  • Vowel digraphs – ai, ee, igh, oa
  • Vowel digraphs – oo, ar, or
  • Vowel digraphs – ur, ow, oi
  • Vowel digraphs – ear, air, ure
  • Vowel digraphs – er
  • Tricky Words: He, she, we, me, be, was, my, you, they, her, all, are
You can expect your child to:
  1. Know the grapheme for each of the 44 phonemes
  2. Blend phonemes to read CVC words and segment to spell them
  3. Recognize and pronounce consonant digraphs sh, ch, th, kn, ph, and gn
  4. Read and spell simple words with consonant digraph spelling patterns in initial, medial, and final positions.
  5. Recognize and produce consonant digraphs in words to make decoding faster and more accurate.
  6. Practice segmenting words containing digraphs
