Social Studies Source-based Skills Crash Course (Sec 3)

I’ve taught Social Studies in MOE Secondary schools and I have been tutoring and teaching Social Studies since 2013. I’ve turned around many students grades for Social Studies over the years. One of my students was in Secondary 3 and he struggled to score for Source-based questions in Social Studies. He improved his grades from a pass to an A2 after 6 months of work through a systematic and guided approach to source based questions. My students improve by a minimum of 2 grades. Problems addressed: In Social Studies Source Based Question section, students have the following weaknesses
  • Unsure about what is required for reliability, usefulness and surprised source-based questions
  • Unsure about a good framework or structure to use while crafting their answer
  • No resources to guide their framing of to write about purpose-based answers
  • No framework or pattern to guide their thinking on reliability analysis
  • Unsure on how to use the context method
Course content and methods: This course aims to address these specific weaknesses and aims to:
  • Give students a basic structure to do their analysis
  • Teach what is required for reliability, surprised and usefulness questions
  • Give students resources which they can use in-class and in their exams for purpose questions
  • Give students an analytical framework to understand sources and analyse them using and discerning which of the 8 patterns the sources follow
  • Discern and understand what is a context-based answer and when to use it
Lesson slides, and worksheets will be given to students for their reference and use for this course. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  • Understand what is required in the exams for reliability, usefulness and surprised questions
