Vocab In Their Big Picture! (P5-6)

The most common learning style of many students when it comes to Vocabulary is rote memorisation. They would take out a dictionary or vocab list and beat the words into their heads- for better or for worse! Often, they are surprised when they are still unable to apply them accurately doing vocab questions or vocab clozes. WHY? This is rooted in the misconception that memory equals to mastering a word or phrase. Mastery of words has a certain logical process spanning memory, contextualisation, association and application! All of these factors will be covered in this 4-week June course. More than just vocab words, we will be looking mostly at phrases and their nuances of meanings. How are we going to improve? I am excited to dive in with your child into the nitty-gritty of nuances between similar words- for e.g. are they positive/negative in terms of direction, their tone, their context, their antonyms/synonyms etc. I want to help them place the word in a greater mindmap, rather than as isolated elements. This means they will be forming basic sentences with these phrases once they achieve mastery. They would also be able to identify the general ideas associated with that phrase when they see it in a passage.
